Fairfield's 10-year-old softball defeated Orange, 1-0, in seven innings Thursday night to win the Section 1 championship and will begin play for the state title Saturday in Waterford. Fairfield will play Mystic Saturday at 6 p.m. at Rotary Field in the first of the best-of-three championship series. Game 2 is Sunday at 6 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, is Monday at 6 p.m.
Shannon McCartney drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. Zoe Holderied laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Shannon over to second base. Michaela O'Donnell hit a line drive single to right center field, allowing McCartney to score the winning run. Brittany Romero struck out 18 batters.
Fairfield's 12-year-old All-Stars will play Orange for the Section 1 championship Friday at 6 p.m. in Danbury.
